Viking Radio launched 40 years ago on 17th April 1984 and the first song played was Celebration by Kool & The Gang.
In October 1988, Viking Radio split frequencies with Viking FM on 96.9 FM, whilst on 1161 AM, Viking Gold was born, which later became Classic Gold, Classic Gold Radio, Great Yorkshire Gold, Great Yorkshire Radio, Magic 1161, Viking 2 and more recently Greatest Hits Radio. Ironically as of today (the 40th birthday), Viking FM is no more and has rebranded to Hits Radio.
